Edith's Barn Groundbreaking Ceremony at Whippoorwill Academy and Village
*June 1st- Groundbreaking ceremony for the Edith's Barn Project 11:00 a.m. You are welcomed to stay for the community picnic or just come for the ceremony.
Following the ceremony there will be a community picnic, live music and games. Whippoorwill Academy and Village is a non-profit 501.C-3 and celebrates local history, the arts and agriculture. If you plan to stay for the picnic please bring a covered dish with food to share. Guests may also want to bring their own chairs.
Guest speakers will be Jimmy Gentry, President of the NC State Grange and Cam Finley, nephew of the late Edith Carter and a board member of Whippoorwill Academy and Village. The architect for the new barn Darren Latham will also be present. Edith Carter was a community activist; a retired art educator; founder of Art in the Park in Blowing Rock; church leader; and lifelong Grange member. She was the founder of Whippoorwill Academy and Village in the late 1980's and opened the village to school groups; organizations; weddings and festivals. The village is now operated and owned by her daughter, Margaret Carter Martine and her husband, Dick Martine who continue with education programs and festivals.Tim Hall, musician, songwriter and former art student of Margaret Carter Martine will be performing with his band "Tim Hall and Buffalo Country". Tim has written music for the television series Yellowstone and has works in the plan for recording with Wynnona Judd. Later in the afternoon, Jack Thompson and friends will also be performing on the pickin' porch. (Rain or Sine)
